hmm, the controls are a bit difficult to grasp. I found the tutorial prompts confusing, and i wasn't sure what timer or prompt was for what during combat. the visuals and sound design are lovely, and this has a lot of potential! i think it definitely needs some polish for the actual gameplay part. maybe even introducing each button and what it does at a slower pace, letting the user get used to click+q a few more times before introducing timing with hitting space and the other in-depth mechanics. Excited to see how this progresses!

HatiValcoran responds:

I have improved the tutorial! I have improved the controls! I have made it *significantly* easier to learn to use the S prompt by slowing the monsters that use it in the tutorial area to a crawl!

Thank you for visiting forest shack, don't forget to leave your name and the score you gave us in the ledger so a forest representative might reach out during the next toll of the midnight bell. ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ✎❑

this game is filled with love. all the little jack o lantern faces (my favourite was the what pumpkin) and the different skellington names. Definitely a lot of passion in this. the movement is very pleasant, i love ghost drifting. the soundtrack is also very fun and catchy. got a little bit caught getting the swamp monster (thought the lake was the swamp) but we got there in the end. happy spooky season!

arudasics responds:

Thanks for such a thoughtful comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Happy Spooky Season!!

played this waaay too long... ill finish this review when i tackle those temples and its no longer 5 am.. pls accept this 4.5 star review for now... i suggest only that you make it a bit clearer things like cracked rocks or npcs, but you are only working with 2 colours and its good. i am so tired... game good. good job... oh also i am hard of hearing and didnt know you had sound puzzles until i reread the description.. oops! hope i didnt miss anything

edit: ... why arent there more reviews? game is very good... why onlyy 2 reviews?? game is so good... weird.. will share w friends later.. zzzzzzzzz

last edit: Hearts of Kings, Mountain heights......... wow, what an excellent game. It had everything i like! Environmental puzzles, secret paths and shortcuts, fun, simple combat... I got all the endings and even deciphered the text from the lairs! Although... I have some questions, there are still so many mysteries. The tomb, the secret room, the church chest, the spirits in David's house (and his suspicious position next to the graveyard..... just saying), and I feel a little bit like one of the bosses was missing. When I play it again I'll keep close attention, but overall this was an excellent wonderful fantastic experience. Really great. I'm still never crazy about audio-based puzzles, but I got there in the end. Awesome work! I hope Frank feels better :)

Fiddleling responds:

I am glad you enjoyed it! Hope you enjoy the temples and lairs as well :)

Edit: You even got the texts from the Lairs! I am so happy that you enjoyed this game, it is my first full release :) . Yeah, there are some parts that are open to the player's interpretation to keep the sense of wonder, that the world is bigger than what we are presented there (and make room for sequels too hahah).

im sorry. you put a lot of work into this and its lovely the art style is nice. the music and transitions are great. the purple forest puzzle is clever. the sphinx puzzle is clever. the box pushing is not. maybe i'll try again some day or if that part if changed but it is genuinely ruining the good parts of the game for me.

chozora responds:

thirty, in total will include more box pushing and also box pulling

Its been a long time since I've played this so Ive revisited it. I was wondering why the ominous, uncertain difficulty felt so familiar... and then I realised.. Have you ever heard of the game "Fear and Hunger"? Conceptually, I think you'd like it. :)

Anyway! The puzzles here were very unintuitive, but its years old and your newer work has vastly improved, so congrats on your growth! The horror elements are one of a kind, you are truly one of the people who can do it like this haha.

Fakewisdom responds:

Thank you :)
Fear and Hunger is on my list of games i want to play but never have "time" to, i finished Darkwood last week so It's probably next
I really tried to internalized the feedback i got here years ago, I hate how long it took me to actually publish something

100% into this... i'm not able to comfortably play combat games like this but the checkpoint system was kind enough to me and the enemy design and what to do with them was pretty intuitive! i like this game a LOT! Music is loads of fun, this really does seem like a game with a whole world and the soundtrack really ties the moods together. i hope rolus gets his cheeseburger... playing with his sad lil blank hungry face really made me want to finish the demo, and hopefully get him that dang burger, but i tragically didn't get to feed my boy :(

i can feel the passion in this project, and the humour, dialogue, quests, and characters really give it its distinct flavour. :) The character designs are so fun too! I love a world with rules i dont understand. but every one in it seems to be used to it all. Very lived-in. Lots of deadbeats in this town, huh! Hope the baby and rolus become good buds

here are some suggestions: i play on keyboard, and even though i got through it with my weak gamer skillz, i found the SHIFT button a lil too inconvenient to use with strafing, so i mostly kept my finger off of it during the game, and didnt even use it for the boss. I would personally prefer Z to be the strafe button, since I only ever use SPACEBAR to shoot. That might just be my own preference, of course, but i think if you're going to continue to let people use SPACE to shoot, it might be worth considering your button configs!

Speaking of strafing, is it the norm to have to release the strafe and direction button to change the direction you're in? I think, if possible, releasing the strafe button should immediately turn rolus in the direction i'm strafing towards. I found, if I was facing down and strafing right, if i released SHIFT, rolus would still be facing down. I'd have to release RIGHT and press it again to turn him right. I hope my words are clear :)

In terms of buttons, I haven't thought of any issues that came from shovel and talk sharing a key, but it feels a lil unintuitive. Not suggesting a change, just sharing my thoughts. (I accidentally shot at. SO MANY PEOPLE) I see it's been mentioned before but an options menu would be great. I can see this is the type of game that wants to be downloaded, not played in a browser. Some of the movement felt real floaty and uncertain. I don't recall what engine you're all using (it can't be unity because i played it in a browser without my machine's fan screaming XD) but I think a little tightening up of the hit boxes for certain obstacles (the lockers on the floor, for example) would be to its benefit. I WAS saved quite a few times by zombies getting caught on the edge of an obstacle though, hehehe. (OH while i'm talking about enemies, the variety of enemy movement in this game is fun! I HATED the flies and really liked fighting the gnomes. hey did you know theres an exploding dog? like did you know it just explodes)

Speaking of, the gnomes are kinda terrifying! I started breaking the blue ones after a while just bc theyre were freaking me out x.x That's not a suggestion, I just hate those damn gnomes.

And finally, i think this game would benefit from more in the character interaction part. I don't know, i think rolus should be allowed to just hang out with people... I really like this setting and im craving little slice-of-life, hahaha. I'll be happy if i see some chill moments in the full game. Don't listen to me if that'll just blow your scope out of the water though XD

I'm actually typing up such a long comment because the ending song is so good, I'm just letting it play XD. The weather is getting warmer here and the soundtrack makes me want to enjoy the summer I have while I still have it. (uvu) Great work, this does everything a demo should do, and you've all put a lot of work into it. Hope to see this project flourish the the future! (its not too early to put the OST on vinyl, right?)

Toony responds:

Insanely happy to hear the world resonated with you that much :)
The mention of "a world with rules I don't understand, but every one in it seems to be used to it all." really is something I'm also fond of so I was glad to hear it put that way!

As for the gameplay grievances, we've been thinking about changing that shift thing! Though i feel like you were confused on how to use it altogether? Holding shift just locks the direction Rolus is facing in case you want to consistently shoot in one direction. Letting go lets you go back to changing direction when you move the arrow keys. We're probably gonna remap it to holding Z instead. Maybe we'll change some of the other stuff, too.

Your slice of life wish... will come true! probably. i like games that you can just exist in myself. that's why you can sit on the bench

When you double-tap the sweep button, and it goes "swish-swish" instead of just "swish"... Love that.

A very cute game. I wish I had a log of all the fish types, because I love fishing minigames. I think if the sunset slowly dipped lower and lower, that would be a good way to tell that the game is progressing. The characters are all super cute and sweet. Thanks for making this! I'll be back for that rare fish one day X)

Bleak-Creep responds:

We’re gonna add a couple new fish as a final update soon, but here’s the rest of them:

Stripe Fish
Zig Zag Fish
Pirahna
Waifish
Noodle Fish
Blimp Fish
Trash
And three ultra rare fish! (1 in 512 odds)

And these will be added soon:
Frog
Block Fish

Simple but fun is correct! No offense but this game is perfect. Really, it does what it needs to do, it's not too challenging, it's lighthearted and easy to understand, I adore it! I agree with comments about this being a great educational tool, too. I love the old-fashioned "two players one keyboard" multiplayer mode. Really loads of fun! :D

Michael-Flaherty responds:

No offense taken! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
